Hey guys! This is a post I wrote a while back for a guest post for Sara Louisa Xo’s blog. I have another post for this weekend, but right now I wanted another introduction post. These are struggles I’m still learning to grow through, but the difference is I know how to fight my battles now. I hope you enjoy my letter to my younger self…
Dear Young Girl,
I know that life has not been easy. You have been torn down by the world. You feel as though your light has been dimmed. That no matter what you do, it will never be enough. You feel lost in a room full of crowded people. You feel as though you have never belonged.
Well, the truth is that you do not belong. This place is not your home. Your soul will finally feel at rest when you are back with your Heavenly Father. But now is not the time for this. Now, more than ever, you must look to the Lord for your strength.
The light He has given you is not something to be ashamed of, although the enemy will try and convince you otherwise. As young women, we are told we need to take care of everyone else before we take care of ourselves. I am here to tell you that is not true. You CAN NOT pour from an empty cup. You NEED to love yourself first if you are to love your neighbor the ways in which Jesus instructed you.
Young girl, I need you to know who God says you are, not who the world says you are. Jesus calls you by your name where the enemy calls you by your sin. Instead of sitting in your fears, sit in these truths:
You are loved (1 John 4:9-10)
You are beautiful (Psalm 139:14)
You have a purpose (Esther 4:14)
You are blessed (Luke 1:45)
You are protected (Isaiah 41:10)
You are set apart from this world (Matthew 5:14)
And best of all, there is nothing that you could do that would separate you from who Jesus says you are because His grace is freely given to those who love Him!
It is so easy to stray from the paths God has before you because it is in our nature as humans, which is why who you surround yourself with is of the UTMOST importance. This lesson is one I wish I learned when I was your age… Yes, Jesus invited everyone to sit at His table, but He was first surrounded by God and then His twelve disciples. Who are you allowing to be a disciple in your life? Are they speaking God’s truths into your life or are they speaking the enemy’s lies? (Proverbs 27:17)
I want to remind you that your value is ONLY defined by your Heavenly Father. I know that the world will try to convince you that your worth is in a boy who will break your heart or a night out that will leave you hurting or a friendship that will raise your insecurities. Yes, that relationship might seem appealing or that night out might give you FOMO or that friendship might’ve had some fun times. At some point, it is necessary to fall into your Father and let go of things that no longer serve your walk with Him. It can be scary to think of a life without certain comforts, so I am here to encourage you to seek comfort in Jesus not the next Jake or Josh.
Young girl, I know that you have been hurt by the church, but you need to know that the church is not God. Try as it may, it is still made up of broken, imperfect people who are all in need of God’s grace. Community of imperfect people who are learning to be more like Jesus is a much safer bet than those who are imperfect and learning to be more like the world. The world will try to convince you that you need to have your life planned out by the time you are 18. Your only job in life is to love and follow Jesus. Everything else will follow.
You may feel defeated and beaten down, so run to the Father! You will still face trials on this earth because it is not your home, but knowing who has gone before you, beside you, and behind you makes this life SO much BETTER! (Matthew 11:28-30).
This world is more connected than it has ever been. It will seem like the days will only become busier and busier. As counterintuitive as it may seem, you will need to schedule time to rest. Maybe even take a Sabbath. This is something I am starting, and even in lockdown, I find it necessary. Young girl, do not buy into the lie that you need to be constantly on because even God took a rest (Hebrews 4:1-11).
Young girl, you do NOT need a man to define your worth. A man worthy of your time will lead you to your Father’s house, not his own. He will not make you feel like you have to do anything for love. Instead you’ll want to do it from love. I know that this community can be slightly irritating with the whole season of singleness thing. It is so much better to wait and stand firm on who you are called to be than to go down the path of destruction. Wait on a Godly man, cause he’ll be so worth it!
With that, remember this. There is no stronger love that you will find in this world or outside of it that can compare the love that your Creator has for you. I want to encourage you to spend time with Him daily. You do not have to have a set time to pray, just do it constantly. Although nothing is surprising to Him, He still wants you to communicate all of your hurts, your needs, and your failures with Him. He wants to hear your gratitudes and see you give Him the glory in all that you do!
Young girl, I want you to know that there is no amount of good deeds that can be done to earn your Father’s love. He showered you in it 2,000 years before you were born. You are forgiven. This also means that you are called to forgive. I know that it is painful. I know that it is challenging. I know that you believe there are some people who do not deserve it. Who are you to call someone unworthy when God calls us all His Beloved? The breakthrough that comes with this forgiveness is like no other. It is necessary for a healthy life and necessary for your relationship with your Maker.
Young girl, I hope you can learn from me. The things we have been through are all a part of our testimony. With the mess comes power. While I would not change anything about where we are today, I know we can help others who may be at the same crossroads. So this final message is for all of the young girls, the old girls and the in between girls: come home.
The same girl, just a new creation
P.S. Keep picking those daisies and remember you are SO loved!
